About the study
Other than Tasmania, the mainland of Australia has been considered as being iodine replete.
A number of recent publications have suggested the possibility of the re-emergence of iodine deficiency in Australia.
In response to the need for data on iodine nutrition status for the Australian population, the National Iodine Nutrition Study (NINS) was conducted in Australia from July 2003 to November 2004.
Coordinated by ACCIDD and overseen by a national steering committee, NINS studied children in each state by measuring iodine in a urine sample and the size of the thyroid gland in the neck, by ultrasound examination.
School children between 8 - 10 years of age were selected for the study. |
